Baby H – Goulburn Newborn Photographer

I thought I’d better blog this newborn session from a few months ago, it’s so gorgeous. I typically encourage clients to book in for their newborn sessions during the first two weeks of baby being born. This little man though was 4 weeks old. He was very settled and calm, and that was a great reminder that the two week rule is definitely not a hard and fast one.  The first few weeks of having a new baby in the house are definitely a learning curve, and you definitely shouldn’t discount getting some photographs taken, just because you have missed the first couple of weeks.

I really love the soft, gentle tones of the family images and the simplicity of the newborn images. I should add that the mum’s stunning makeup was done by the lovely Lex, at Made. By Lex.

I’m also pretty much booked out for the remainder of 2017. I have tried to squeeze as many families in as I possibly could. January is all about spending time with my boys, so I am not taking on many bookings at all during this time. Our third son is starting Primary school in 2018 and I’m really looking forward to spending some time with him over the summer holidays. He is my super chatty child, so it will be very quiet to not have him home.

I can’t believe we are now only 6 Friday’s away from Christmas. The last 6 months of the year always seem to rush by so quickly. My annual Christmas sale will be starting soon. It usually includes discounted session fees and discounts on packages and vouchers. If you’d like to find out about this sale first, jump on my email list HERE. My prices will definitely be increasing in 2018, so this is your last chance to really get yourself a bargain!

Little Baby C {Goulburn Newborn Photographer}

I get asked all the time what it is that I love above all else when photographing newborn babies. And at first I’d be quick to answer ‘Oh, I just love babies’. And that is of course absolutely true. But when I think a little more on the question it becomes obvious to me that there are so many more reasons that I adore this genre the most. I love watching the interactions between the baby and their parents. I’m always acutely aware of the newness of the relationship. That they are all finding their feet together and I always feel so privileged to able to witness it.

I love the fact that every baby is different. I love those initial moments as you explore how the baby reacts to touch and movement and sound as you settle them ready for their session. It’s always been fascinating to me that a baby can be wide awake one moment, keenly taking in their surrounds and sound asleep moments later. And some babies just take longer to settle in to that deep, relaxing sleep. And of course there are always the little ones who never settle in to a sleep at all. Suddenly I’m taken back 10 years to when my eldest son was a newborn. I spent hours pacing the hallway singing Beatles songs in the hope of finally getting him to sleep. Interestingly he’s still probably often the last to go to sleep in our family.

I also love capturing all those little details that you think you’ll remember forever. It doesn’t always feel it at the time but the newborn stage really is a fleeting moment in time.

This session had a little baby who wasn’t really that keen on settling. Her mum was nothing short of amazing as she feed and settled on repeat throughout the session. I also always encourage my families to bring along things that are special to them and their baby. The gorgeous fluffy pink rug in this session was a present from the babies Nan.

Baby K {Goulburn Newborn Photographer}

I say this all the time and it is just so true – I absolutely adore babies!

And I’ve been so lucky already this year to get to photograph lots of gorgeous babies. This session was just so amazing. This little guy was so content and settled and happily slept through his session with barely a squeak. And his older brother is obviously very smitten with his new baby brother.

I could have easily blogged his entire session but instead here are just a few of my favourites

Little Baby A {Goulburn Newborn Photographer}

This was such a gorgeous shoot. Little Baby A’s mum and dad were very relaxed and the light in the room we chose to shoot in was just about perfect.

Sweet Baby L

I was so excited to photograph this precious little boy. I’ve known his beautiful mum for what feels like forever. It was beautiful to see how loved he is already by his older brother and cousins.

Baby S {Goulburn Newborn Photographer}

I think one of the reasons I love photography so much is that there is always something new to be learnt. And newborn shoots are always so challenging that I feel like I come away learning a bunch of technical stuff (which is awesome) and more importantly something new about myself as a person and the photographer I am always striving to become. I just adored this shoot, so so much. Baby S and his super calm and relaxed mum were an absolute treat to work with.

And continuing the learning theme, this session was actually the catalyst for me doing something I have dreamed about doing for ages, so I’ve bitten the bullet and booked in for an intensive newborn workshop next year with one of my all time favourite baby photographers. I can’t wait!

Sweet Baby M {Goulburn Newborn Photographer}

I remember so vividly the first few weeks of becoming a mum. It’s a time of wonder and confusing and overwhelming emotions. I remember feeling so accomplished and clever, creating this tiny little human. I also remember not really knowing what I was meant to do with him much of the time. Oh and the lack of sleep – no wonder that is used as a form of torture, right? But like many first time mums’ I muddled through and now he’s almost 10. I joke that he was my practice child (having done it three more times since) but really he was (and still is) my greatest learning curve.

I recently had this session with sweet baby M and her beautiful and unbelievably calm mum. It is so amazing to be able to capture these sweet moments in a babies first weeks. I hope she always looks back at these images with a sense of pride and a heart bursting with love. The newborn stage really is so fleeting.
This is also a reminder that every session held in August receives a bonus 20″ x 20″ collage print of their favourite images from their session (valued at $140). I’ve been loving all the collages that have been ordered so far.  You can purchase your session HERE

Mum + Dad + Baby = Three {Goulburn Family Photographer}

This family is so lucky to live in such a beautiful and peaceful location. The weather on the day of this shoot was a little strange – misty, foggy and damp, but it provided beautiful lighting for our session.

I really love working with relaxed and trendy families, you just know that there will be so many fantastic shots and this session was no exception.  Here are a few of my favourites:

Two boys and a little lady {Goulburn Family Photographer}

I remember when the teenager in this shoot was just a tiny little baby with gorgeous big eyes. I was so happy to be able to take some photos for his family recently and discover what a brilliant young man he has grown in to – funny, articulate and caring. His parents should be very proud. He also has a beautiful younger brother and sister who were equally as delightful to work with, no doubt a product of their relaxed and happy parents.

Here are a few of my favourites.

So how does an accountant end up starting a photography business?

I am a born and raised Goulburn girl. I love the town, the people, the location.

After school I went to university at ANU in Canberra and got a Commerce degree. I was so lucky during that time to get a cadetship with a local accounting firm. I loved everything about working there, the people, my clients, the daily challenges. I loved studying and becoming Chartered. But I always felt a yearning to do something more creative, something that soothed my soul as well as challenged my mind.

Between babies three and four (yes we have four) I left my job of 12 years to go and work in our family engineering business. Suddenly I had the increased flexibility to find time for the things I loved (well you know as much as is possible as a mum of small children!!). On a whim late last year I signed up to do some photography courses, finally pulling out my DSLR from storage, where it had been sitting, unused for 18 months.

It didn’t take long before I was living and breathing all things photography. You see I am totally an all or nothing kind of girl. I’ve also been very fortunate to have the guidance and encouragement of a very talented and generous established Sydney based photographer. She established a business mastermind and it allowed me to connect with other photographers.

My partner Ben has been an avid supporter and motivator for as long as I have known him and has always questioned me on what my passions are. Finally after 10 years I have a definitive answer. I get giddy with excitement when I take a photo and I see rendered there the vision I had in my mind. I am passionate about creating simple and beautiful images. Of capturing who people are and what they love in that exact moment.

It took me a long time to say out loud that this was what I am doing. An accountant surely can’t be a photographer also can they? But you know what – they can and I am. And I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for me.

Ally xx
