So how does an accountant end up starting a photography business?

I am a born and raised Goulburn girl. I love the town, the people, the location.

After school I went to university at ANU in Canberra and got a Commerce degree. I was so lucky during that time to get a cadetship with a local accounting firm. I loved everything about working there, the people, my clients, the daily challenges. I loved studying and becoming Chartered. But I always felt a yearning to do something more creative, something that soothed my soul as well as challenged my mind.

Between babies three and four (yes we have four) I left my job of 12 years to go and work in our family engineering business. Suddenly I had the increased flexibility to find time for the things I loved (well you know as much as is possible as a mum of small children!!). On a whim late last year I signed up to do some photography courses, finally pulling out my DSLR from storage, where it had been sitting, unused for 18 months.

It didn’t take long before I was living and breathing all things photography. You see I am totally an all or nothing kind of girl. I’ve also been very fortunate to have the guidance and encouragement of a very talented and generous established Sydney based photographer. She established a business mastermind and it allowed me to connect with other photographers.

My partner Ben has been an avid supporter and motivator for as long as I have known him and has always questioned me on what my passions are. Finally after 10 years I have a definitive answer. I get giddy with excitement when I take a photo and I see rendered there the vision I had in my mind. I am passionate about creating simple and beautiful images. Of capturing who people are and what they love in that exact moment.

It took me a long time to say out loud that this was what I am doing. An accountant surely can’t be a photographer also can they? But you know what – they can and I am. And I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for me.

Ally xx
